Do you know your audience?
Has Sad Jacob read your stories a hundred times?
Some of the common patterns for college essays are:
- I didn't make the team (get a part in a play, get elected to student government) in the ninth grade, but I persevered…
- I volunteered on a service trip (at a local program, in a school) and learned how much people are the same and that I like to help…
- I like playing soccer (am good at math, have been in theater) and now coach (mentor, support) younger kids…
These are all great things for you to do, and you should write about them in the Thinker phase and even include some aspects of these stories in your essay. But be careful not to make the pattern of the story one Sad Jacob as read over and over.

Do you know your intention?
